New football coaching staff likely by next week

The football federation wants to bring in the new coaching staff before Jamie Day's arrival

Two days after announcing former England and Arsenal youth team member Jamie Day as the new Bangladesh head coach, the BFF is hopeful of completing the deal of the assistant coach, fitness coach and goalkeeping coach by next week.

A 41-member pre-preliminary squad, including nine members from last year's Saff U-18 Championship, was announced after a national team management committee meeting at BFF House in Dhaka Saturday.

Three to four more names are likely to be added to the list before the national camp at BKSP, Savar, set to begin Saturday.

Day's one-year contract will start from June 1 and the 38-year old English coach, who was involved with different England youth teams right until the U-18 level, is likely to join the national camp by the first week of June.

The football federation wants to bring in the new coaching staff before Day's arrival.

"We want to begin the camp Saturday so that we can reach the tempo by June. We are trying to complete the deal of the assistant coach, fitness coach and goalkeeping coach by next week so that they can join the camp, along with the new head coach," said national team management committee chairman Kazi Nabil Ahmed after the meeting.

Day's coaching background at different academies like Arsenal (2006-09) and Charlton Athletic, along with his player-cum-managerial role at various England National League clubs, including his notable role at Welling United, were some of the factors which attracted the BFF’s attention.

Informing that Day's name was referred by Arsenal, Nabil said, "He [Day] was actually raised in the Arsenal academy. He was also involved in four youth (U-15, 16, 17, 18) national teams. He was on track to be possibly involved with the England senior team as well. Because of various injuries he got sidetracked for a few years. Then he went for coaching and continued both playing and coaching till the age of 35."

When Day does take up the responsibility early June, he would find five young players - forwards Jafar Iqbal, Mahbubur Rahman Sufil and Biplu Ahmed and defenders Tutul Hossain Badshah and Bishwanath Ghosh - who were not only among the 23-man final squad for the Laos friendly on March 27 this year but also played notable roles during the Saff U-18 Championship in Bhutan last year.

Obtaining the Uefa A License along with FA coaching certificate Levels 1-4, Day's glaring success during his coaching career came at Welling United where he guided the Conference South side to Conference Premier promotion in his fourth year at the club.

The former Bournemouth midfielder's first ever job as national team head coach might appear a bit challenging with the BFF's current focus on the Asian Games and the Saff Championship in August and September.

Hoping that the new head coach would be "different" from the other recent Bangladesh coaches, Nabil recalled one of the conversations which he had with Day while negotiating the deal in London.

"He asked me my target and I told him what I want," Nabil paused before adding, "I told him I want to make the best effort to reach the Saff Championship final."
