Bangladesh football team will begin their 13-day long training camp in Qatar Sunday after a 37-man contingent, including 28 players, left Dhaka Saturday. The camp will serve as preparation for the Asian Games and Saff Championship.

The Asian Games 2018, scheduled to get underway next month, will be played by the Bangladesh U-23 footballers and three senior players while the Saff Championship has been set as the main target for the national team by football’s governing body in the country. The BFF has been in talks with the respective federations to arrange a couple of practice matches.

The whole squad, including the senior members, will move directly to Indonesia following the camp. Regular national players like Nabib Newaj Jibon, Towhidul Alam Sabuj, Sohel Rana and Shahidul Alam Sohel have not travelled to Qatar due to injury.

Bangladesh’s English head coach Jamie Day seemed content with his charges after spending three weeks at the training camp at BKSP and Dhaka where the focus was mainly on fitness, rather than the technical aspects.Bangladesh have been drawn in Group B at the Asian Games alongside Uzbekistan, Qatar and Thailand.

“It's a tough group but it's also an opportunity to see my players before the Saff Championship,” said Day.

“The boys have been doing lots of hard work in the last three weeks with all the running and fitness work. There is a good mix of young and experienced players,” he added.

Along with assistant coach Stuart Watkiss, local coaches Mahbub Hossain Roksy and Masud Parvez Kaiser will accompany the team while newly appointed English fitness coach Roger Paul Davis is expected to join the camp in Qatar. Like Day, Watkiss also said they will look closely at the technical work in Qatar.

Denmark-born expatriate midfielder Jamal Bhuiyan said, “We will work more in Qatar to see how we have to play and the group will also come close to each other. This is actually good for the team because our main target is the Saff Championship.”
