The 2018 Fifa World Cup’s top-scorer and England captain Harry Kane said they want to make their own history following their progression to the last four for the first time in 28 years.

England defeated Sweden 2-0 in the quarter-final in Samara, Russia Saturday to register only their third ever semi-final berth in the greatest show on earth.

England previously advanced to the semis at home in 1966, where they eventually finished champion, and in 1990 in Italy where they lost to West Germany in the last four.

English fans in Russia and back home celebrated wildly and Kane informed that they have taken one step further towards realising their dream of lifting the trophy.

“It’s amazing. We were quite emotional after the game. [Saturday] was a bit different, more of a calm and professional performance. Obviously [Jordan] Pickford’s made a couple of good saves. I’m proud to make my ex-players proud. Look, we said we want to write our own history. We’ve got one step further,” an elated Kane told reporters at the mixed zone following the game.

“A lot of us weren’t even born, when that was happening. 100%, we feel proud you know. We feel proud after making the fans proud. That’s what we wanted to do when we set out (in this tournament). Play good football, work hard, and play passionately. And we think we’ve done that so we’re enjoying it. We are seeing the fans enjoying it here and back home. So we should just got to try and keep it going.

“Yeah, incredible. It was a great performance [Saturday]. Obviously so much pressure, the world watching on, England watching on, I thought we handled it really well. We were composed, we played our style. Yeah, a 2-0 win and the quarter-final worked out for us,” added the Tottenham Hotspur forward.

England have often appeared uninspiring in the business stages of major tournaments in recent times but the camaraderie between the players in Russia has been visible for all to see.

And Kane said the mood in the camp is that none of the English footballers want to go home as of yet.

“We’ve got a great squad. We spoke about the togetherness, the manager (Gareth Southgate). We’re just enjoying being here. We don’t want to go home yet and let anyone down. We want to be here till the end. We’re enjoying it. No one wants to go home, everyone wants to finish the job,” said Kane, who has scored six goals so far in the Russia World Cup.

“Obviously it’s been a long time since England have done well in a major tournament. We know we’ve got a tough game coming up. We can’t complain. We feel composed out there. I look around and everyone was on the same wavelength. We need to remain calm if we’re to go all the way,” he added, alluding to the semi-final clash against Croatia, who beat host nation Russia later Saturday in Sochi.

“It’s amazing to be a part of this World Cup. I’ve got the feeling from myself and the boys that we don’t want to go home now. We know we’ve got a difficult game coming up.”

Kane said they might just have inspired a generation of kids to take up the game of football and dream of representing England.

“As a player and a professional, I have a job on the pitch. Yeah, hopefully we’ve inspired the people, inspired the kids in this tournament. Kids would now want to grow up and play for England. To be here, and be a part of it, I’m so proud,” said a delighted Kane.

England and Spurs midfielder Dele Alli, who scored alongside Leicester City defender Harry Maguire to secure England’s passage, said they’re not quite the finished article.

“Yeah, it feels unbelievable. Great performance by the boys. When you look at it like that it feels great. It was about team play. I don’t think I played as well as I could’ve. Obviously it’s nice to score. Yeah, as a player you want to score goals. I took the chance. As a team we’re playing very well. Every day I work hard to improve. We want to keep achieving things together. We’re not the finished article,” said Alli.
