Scoring problem is nothing new in the national team as well as to Bangladesh coach Jamie Day, but the English coach has to deal with another problem, which is somewhat sweet.

Some of the players, who got chance against Philippines Friday showed valiant effort albeit in a losing cause, to create the dichotomy for the coach to select the starting XI for the crucial semi-final in Cox’s Bazar Wednesday.

Philippines sealed the match by converting their only notable chance in the match while the host created at least half a dozen chances while controlling the tempo.

Day was upset with the misses but expressed satisfaction with the hard work of his front men for being attacking, and the back men for their resilience. Day admitted the new situation in team selection after the Philippines game Friday.

“Replacements in every place in Bangladesh are going to do their best. Everyone who came in [against Philippines] did extremely well, even the ones who didn’t have enough game time. It gives me headache now who to pick for the semi-final. I want to look at the squad of players and see the positions where I have to take tough decisions,” said Day.

The two replacements at the full-back positions made sure they blocked majority of the Philippines attacks on both the wings, along with creating chances for the attacking teammates as well.

Bishwanath Ghosh and Waly Faisal’s absence was hardly felt. Rahmat Mia reminded at the beginning that Bishwanath is not the only long throw-in specialist in the team.

The left-back’s similar efforts initiated the first scoring chance of the match in the fourth minute. Mahbubur Rahman Sufil’s replacement Towhidul Alam Sabuj’s header was denied in a goal-mouth scramble.

Sushanta Tripura also looked more mature at right-back compared to the Asian Games.

Emon Mahmud returned to the starting XI after the Sri Lanka friendly in Nilphamari prior to the Saff Championship, but with a new role in holding midfield with Masuk Mia Jony in an attacking role.  The new Bashundhara Kings signing played in attacking midfield in the last two seasons for Abahani Limited.

Day had no complaints with Emon but the midfielder was not fully content with his own performance.

“Not 100% satisfied with my game. I have the capability to do much better,” said Emon before adding, “It’s really positive for the team that everyone is performing well, trying to prove their worth and even the substitutes are bringing pace and rhythm to the game. We often discussed to ourselves that every player has improved.”

Striker Nabib Newaj Jibon couldn’t feature in the Saff Championship, but once he returned against Laos for the opening game, his new-found skills and movements inside the opponent’s terrain earned praise from the coaches.

Both Jibon and Sabuj however, couldn’t hide their disappointment for the misfiring efforts in front of the goal.

Bangladesh are scheduled to fly to Cox’s Bazar Sunday at 1pm ahead of their crucial semi-final against Palestine Wednesday. There was no training session Saturday, but only swimming and gym sessions.

The players who started against Philippines were given rest to recover and only joined the swimming session while the rest attended the gym session.
