The 2022 Qatar World Cup pre-qualifiers are very much in the mind of Bangladesh football team head coach Jamie Day.

Ranked 192nd out of a total of 211 countries in the Fifa world ranking, Bangladesh will have to contest the home and away pre-qualifiers.

The qualifying round in Asia is all set to get underway in June this year, with the draw scheduled for April 17.

And in a press conference Friday at BFF House in Dhaka, Day said the pre-qualifiers wouldn’t pose that much of a problem for the men in red and green as they would be involved in league action.

The English coach said, “We need at least 10 days for preparation ahead of the qualifying round. We will undergo intense training during this time. We will probably come up against a strong opponent. That’s why we need to prepare well. League will be held at that time so the players will be fit. Hence, we won’t face problems in the international arena.”

Day went on to express satisfaction with the recent performance of his charges.

Bangladesh beat Cambodia in a Fifa international friendly and following a conditional camp in Qatar, took part in the AFC U-23 Qualifiers in Bahrain.

“We won in Cambodia. The players also played well in the two practice matches in Qatar. Even though we lost two games against formidable opposition in Bahrain, the lads fought hard. And we defeated Sri Lanka in the last match. Overall, I am happy with their performance. They gave their all in the field.

Day’s contract with the BFF will come to an end in June but national team manager Satyajit Das Rupu is hopeful of extending his tenure.

Rupu said, “The team are playing well under Jamie. He is trying to improve Bangladesh football. Personally, I am happy with him. Hopefully, we can also work with him in future.”

Day is also looking forward to extending his tenure.

He said, “I am interested to keep working with Bangladesh football. I hope something positive will come up between the two parties (BFF and Day).”
