Abahani registered their fifth consecutive victory in the Bangladesh Premier League after handing Brothers Union a 5-3 defeat in an entertaining encounter at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday.
The Sky Blues led the opening half 3-0 after a brace from Jewel Rana while Brothers tried to comeback in the second half but Sunday Chizoba’s two late goals sealed the fate of the game.
The victory helped the Dhanmondi giants reduced the gap with table leaders Bashundhara Kings to four points but the latter have one more game in hand. Defending champions Abahani now have 48 points from 19 matches while Brothers remained in the relegation zone with 13 points from 18 matches.
Nabib Newaz Ziban gave Abahani an early lead in less than a minute into the clock tapping home in a low cross of Jewel Rana. Jewel doubled the lead in the 13th minute chested down the ball inside the net after Brothers keeper Sujon failed to clear Rubel Miya’s cross. Jewel netted another superb goal in the 21st minute unleashing a shot from outside the left corner of the box that flew over the Brothers keeper.
Abahani seemed to have given less effort in the second half than the opening half while Brothers enjoyed more ball possession at opponents’ terrain but with lack of clear-cut chances.
But the Gopibagh outfits finally pulled one back courtesy of an own goal by Tutul Hossain Badsha in the 77th minute when the Abahani defender headed Shofiqul Islam Shafi’s corner into his own net. Mannaf Rabby reduced the margin in the 83rd minute when the young forward placed home in a pass from Minhazul Abedin Ballu.
Sunday Chizoba extended Abahani’s lead again three minutes later placing the ball into the near post following a cutback of Rubel.
Brothers scored again to make it 4-3 as Ballu sent the ball under Abahani keeper following a through pass from Sudanese forward James Saeed Moga. Sunday sealed the victory for Abahani in the injury time tapping home from a yard away following a cross from Mamun Mia.
Meanwhile in the day’s other match, Arambagh defeated Nofel Sporting Club 2-1 at Shaheed Bulu Stadium in Noakhali. Arambagh remained at fifth place with 26 points from 19 matches while Nofel were placed tenth with 16 points from 18 matches.
Mohammad Arifur Rahman put Arambagh in the 7th minute sliding home in a low cross of Paul Emile before he doubled the lead in the 69thminute smashing from inside the box after a long ball by Jahid Hossain.
Guinean forward Ismael Bangoura pulled one back in the 84th minute sending the ball into the near post following a deflected free-kick of Kamrul Islam.
