Bangladesh earned an inspiring 1-1 draw against pre-tournament favorites India in their Saff Championship group stage match, despite playing with 10 men for the last 33 minutes at Male National Stadium, Maldives Monday.

The 18-year old full-back Yasin Arafat equalized with his first international goal in the 74th minute after Indian talisman Sunil Chhetri gave his side the lead following a defensive blunder in the 26th minute.

Bangladesh’s defender Bishwanath Ghosh received his marching orders in the 57th minute, but Oscar Bruzon’s men kept their determination and returned strongly in the game despite numerical disadvantage, and continued the unbeaten run in the tournament.

The 189th ranked side in the Fifa ranking, Bangladesh, who won their first match against Sri Lanka, might have even won the match against the 107th ranked India had they not missed a couple of easy chances.

Bruzon made two changes in the side as he fielded Saad Uddin and Matin Miah in place of Jewel Rana and Sumon Reza respectively as winger and No 9.

India held good possession early in the game but Bangladesh were sharp enough to create chances.

The 4-1-4-1 deployed by Spaniard Bruon seemed effective as Bangladesh looked calm and composed and they got a half chance in the sixth minute but a Yasin shot from a Jamal Bhuiyan pass went wide off the goalpost.

Matin's cross from the right side was cleared three minutes later and he failed to take a shot off a Mohammad Ibrahim cross in the 11th minute.

Bangladesh orchestrated another chance in the 21st minute from a Jamal corner but the ball was cleared from the opposition box.

Saad’s shot off a Jamal free-kick also went wide in the 26th minute.

However, India scored a goal against the run of play seconds later.

Bangladesh center-back Topu Barman, who scored the solitary goal for Bangladesh in their 1-0 win against Sri Lanka, failed to mark Chhetri and the latter placed the ball home from an Udanta Singh cutback.

This is the sixth goal of India’s most prolific striker against Bangladesh in as many matches and the 37-year old looked hungrier for more, but his shot in the 38th minute went out after brushing the post.

Bangladesh got a great opportunity a minute later from a counter attack but Biplo Ahmed’s shot off a Saad pass was saved by the Indian goalkeeper and Bangladesh went to the break trailing by a goal.

Bangladesh created a golden opportunity in the 52nd minute but after receiving a cross from Saad, Rakib Hossain failed to keep the ball on target from close range.

The pursuit of equalizer got a huge blow five minutes later when Bishwanath charged Liston Colaco from behind and the referee did not hesitate to show him a straight red card.

India failed to take advantage as desperate Bangladesh continued their attacks, especially from the left side, and one of the forays forward yielded a corner.

Jamal’s corner was deflected by Rakib’s head towards unmarked Yeasin near the right side of the post and the 18-year old slotted the ball home with a neat header that made the crowd elated.

After the goal, Bruzon asked the crowd, which mostly comprised of Bangladeshi expatriates, to inspire his players and the men in red and green held their fort intact for the remaining minutes with their heads high amid the cheers of the ecstatic spectators.

Bangladesh now have four points from two games while India have earned one point from their first match.

Bangladesh will next face hosts Maldives Thursday.
