Abahani Limited returned back to the driving seat in the Green Delta Insurance Premier Division Hockey League after beating archrival Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited 3-2 in a thrilling super-five encounter at Maulana Bhasani National Stadium in Dhaka Monday.
Young national midfielder Roman Sarkar scored twice, including the winner in the late stages of the game, to secure Abahani's third straight win in the super five. Abahani earlier lost to the same side in the round robin league.
Former Malaysian striker Tajuddin Ahmed put the Sky Blues ahead with only two minutes into the clock but Mohammedan's Indian forward Gurjinder Singh cancelled the lead seven minutes later. Roman gave Abahani the lead again in the 20th minute.
Gurjinder scored his second to restore parity three minutes into the second half from a penalty corner. Roman sealed victory in the 61st minute and boosted his side's confidence ahead of their final crucial tie against Mariner Youngs Club Tuesday.
Meanwhile, reigning champion Mariner registered their second consecutive super-five victory in style after handing Ajax Sporting Club a thrashing 9-1 defeat in the day's first game at the same venue.
Hasan Jubair Niloy continued his fine form by scoring a hat-trick while Mohsin Ahmed, Mainul Islam Kaushik, Parampreet Singh, Pushkor Khisa Mimo, Naim Uddin and Azizul Islam added one each for Mariner. Hridoy Anis scored the only goal for Ajax.
