A total of 11 top Asian hockey countries, split into two groups, will be participating in the men's hockey event with the champions to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Indonesia
Bangladesh hockey team have been placed in the same group with higher ranked Malaysia, Pakistan and familiar foes, Oman in the draw of the Asian Games 2018 hockey event scheduled to get underway in Indonesia next month.
The opening game against Oman on August 20 would be an opportunity for Rasel Mahmud Jimmy and co to take revenge of their defeat they conceded during the final of the Asian Games hockey qualifiers away in Oman, four months ago. Bangladesh lost the game 2-0 but ensured qualification for the Games as the second-best finisher.
Lead by Malaysian coach Gobinathan Krishnamurthy, Bangladesh will host Indonesia in their second match with a day's interval before taking on Malaysia, Thailand and Pakistan on August 24, 26 and 28 respectively. The classification matches begin a day later. All the matches will be held at the GBK Sports Complex in Jakarta.
