NSC to erect old building for high-rise one
The gymnasium in the National Sports Council's (NSC) old building has often been used as the only venue for at least seven games - gymnastics, wrestling, karate, taekwondo, judo, wushu and most recently basaap. Neither of the aforementioned sports get the advantage of having an own venue. It has been a regular feature at the open floor gymnasium, more than 100 feet long, where different activities like practice, workshops and tournaments take place at the same time on the same floor. What's more, none of the federations get more than six months to run their activities. Before any tournament or training camp, the respective federations ask the NSC to provide them space in the venue. The NSC reserves different portions of the floor for different games. Most of the federations don't get what they require. A scarcity in venues also creates problems for the practising athletes, including a lack of concentration, not enough space to set up equipments and not to forget, noisy and unhealthy environment. Under the finances of the NSC, the gymnastics federation recently conducted a talent-hunt programme, training selected 40 kids from 19 different districts for a month. It ended at the first week of this month at the NSC gymnasium. Forty young gymnasts, aged below 12, had to share space that is only enough to accommodate around seven-eight senior gymnasts at a time. The gymnastic federation claimed that it should get at least 80 feet of floor space to run its activities but rarely get 50 feet to train 40 children at the eastern side of the floor. It couldn't even use three-four of its total apparatus due to a lack of space. After the camp ended, the space was reduced to half for other activities of gymnastics. “We can't set all our apparatus properly. The space is very limited, compared to what we require. The players can't concentrate. There are disturbances from other sports activities. We have been saying this to the NSC for many years but to no avail,” said Ahmedur Rahman Bablu, who has been general secretary of the Bangladesh Gymnastic Federation since 2010. The NSC gymnasium is the oldest and only venue of the gymnastics federation in the capital. For many years, the venue was used mainly for gymnastics activities till the 1990s. Wrestling activities also took place there, but not so frequently, before judo started eating up space. Karate, taekwondo and wushu started using the space in the last 10 years. The latest development is that the taekwondo federation has been built in place of gymnastics' storeroom. There were also continuous noises from the activities of other sports under the same roof. The one and a half month long talent-hunt and training programme of wresting federation is being held beside the space reserved for gymnastics. It will conclude this Wednesday. “We have been using it for decades but now there are countless problems with regards to the venue. We don't have enough space. And there is always noise from the other sports programmes,” said Bangladesh Amateur Wrestling Federation general secretary Tabiur Rahman Palowan to Dhaka Tribune last Friday. The far western part of the floor has recently been used for karate and taekwondo. NSC to build high-rise building to solve crisis The NSC was handed its current new building, beside the old one, during the caretaker government's tenure. It is planning to break the five-storied old building in order to build a multi-storied high-rise building to acquire more space for sports activities. During an interview with Dhaka Tribune on January 29 this year, NSC secretary Ashoke Kumar Biswas, admitting the crisis of venues for indoor games, informed that they have already approached the government for the new building. “The venue at our old building is now being used a lot for different games. The longer the new venues are not built, the problem will remain. We currently have a plan to build a new high-rise building in place of the old one. We have already appointed a consultant firm for that. We will make a proposal and give it to the government,” said the NSC secretary. The situation will worsen during the construction work as there are no alternative venues for most of the federations dependent on it. Ashoke said they will be looking for an alternate venue sooner rather than later. He added, “We have built a new venue (at Paltan Maidan) for Roll Ball World Cup. We also have plans to shift some games over there. We have to continue with what we have now until the new building is complete.” When queried as to how the venues would be accommodated in their plans for the new building, he hinted – car parking at ground floor, accommodating two games on average in each floor while for some sports disciplines like gymnastics, the whole floor could be used. Meanwhile, there are complaints from different federations that the same hopes were given to them before the new NSC tower with 20 floors was complete. But neither of the federations got anything eventually. There is a big restaurant inside the tower but there's no place for the athletes. Ashoke explained, “When the building was handed over, it was during the time of 1/11. The decision the administration took during that time, we can't change that now. The restaurant was in their plans when the building was built. We didn't install it as per our desire. “We have told every federation that if you want, you can move your camps from Dhaka to somewhere else outside the capital. Some federations are doing so. Volleyball (camp) is in Rajshahi while the Women's Sports Complex that we built in Gopalganj is now empty but nobody wants to go there for a camp.”
