Archery field in Purbachal in the offing
The human figures with bow and arrow in the terracotta plaque at Paharpur and Mainamati Bihar are evidence that Bengal has been familiar with archery for more than thousand years now, not only for hunting purposes but also for means of entertainment. But Bangladesh rarely had any activity in modern archery till the beginning of the 21st century as it took three decades since the liberation war to form the archery federation in 2001. The country became affiliated with World Archery Federation two years later. The Bangladesh archers have left notable marks in different international archery events since then. Dhaka is going to host its biggest ever archery event, the 20th Asian Archery Championship, starting next Saturday.

And another good news for the country's archery community is that they are going to have their own archery stadium for the first time in the capital's Purbachal area. An archery workshop, organised by Bangladesh Sports Press Association, was held Friday afternoon where Bangladesh Archery Federation president Mohammad Mainul Islam expressed their desire to make Dhaka one of the hubs of Asia's archery activity after revealing the news of the proposed venue. "I went to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to get her blessings ahead of the 20th Asian Championship. She became very happy knowing that 35 countries will be participating in such a mega event. I also let her know that we don't have an archery field of our own and asked for space in Purbachal so that a building and a stadium can be built. She signed the paper the same day and the letter reached the ministry the following day," said Mainul during his speech Friday.

The archery federation boss also said it is not important to win gold medals. Instead, it is more important to spread the game across the country, and also to the young generation. Earlier in June, 2013, the then Asian Archery Federation secretary general visited Dhaka where he had revealed their plan to develop the game in this region with the project of providing equipments and technical supports. National archery coach Mohammad Ziaul Hoque, internationally acclaimed judge Tanvir Ahmed and continental judge Faruque Dhali conducted the workshop. The federation's general secretary Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapol also spoke on the occasion while BSPA president Mustafa Mamun presided the programme.
