
Bangladesh archers Ruman Shana and Mohammad Tamimul Islam continued their fine form in the Asian Archery Championship 2017 as they reached the 1/16 elimination round after beating Hong Kong and Bhutan archers respectively in the recurve men's individual event at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Monday.
After getting a bye in the first round, Ruman defeated Ma Hing Kin of Hong Kong 6-2 while Tamim earned a hard-fought win of 6-5 over Tshering Kinley of Bhutan. The other two Bangladesh archers from the same event - Ibrahim Sheikh Rezwan and Hakim Ahmed Rubel – exited the event after losing against Nor Hasrin of Malaysia and Jin Tao of China respectively.
Ruman will face Sri Lankan archer Sajeev de Silva in the next round Tuesday morning while Tamim will play against a toug opponent from South Korea, Lee Woo Seok, who was ranked second in the qualification round. If Ruman overcomes his south Asian opponent, he is most likely to face sixth-ranked Mongolian archer Jantsan Gantugs in the 1/8 elimination round on the same day.
Roksana Akter, Susmita Banik and and Bonna Akter, who got byes in the first round, will also test their potential in the compound women's 1/16 elimination round Tuesday but looking at the scores of the opponents, only Roksana has the possibility of reaching the 1/8 elimination round. Bipasa Akter was ousted from the competition after losing to Su Su Hlaing of Malaysia Monday.
In the compound men's individual event, only Abul Kashem Mamum managed to reach the 1/16 elimination round after beating Pakistani archer Adeel Qadir 141-138 in the 1/24 elimination round while Mohammad Nazmul Huda, Ehsan Ahmed and Milon Molla lost their respective matches to see the exit door.
Bangladesh recurve men's team, comprising Ruman, Tamim and Rubel, outplayed Mongolia 6-0 but have to face favourite South Korea in the top-four elimination round Thursday. Bangladesh compound men's team also have to play against South Korea in the same round after the former defeated Iraq 220-213 in the 1/8 elimination round Monday. Bangladesh compound women's team got Chinese Taipei in the 1/4 elimination round while the recurve women's side lost to giant South Korea 5-1 in the 1/8 elimination round.
Bangladesh compound mixed team containing Roksana and Mamun managed to beat Hong Kong 148-142 but lost to South Korea 144-158 in the 1/4 elimination round. The Bangladesh recurve mixed team comprising Ruman and Nadia Akter Shapla lost to Chinese Taipei 6-2 set in the 1/8 eliminator.
Meanwhile in the recurve women's individual event, all the Bangladesh archers - Rabeya Khatun, Nasrin Akter, Beauty Ray and Shapla – exited the tournament after losing against Japan, Mongolia, Singapore and Chinese archers Monday.
