Wohaimong Marma left Dhaka for Singapore Thursday afternoon to take part in the age-group category events, scheduled to begin Sunday

Approximately a month after Bangladesh youth gymnastic team's first ever participation in an international tournament abroad, Bandarban's Quantum Cosmo School's sixth-grade student Wohaimong Marma will represent Bangladesh in the 15th Singapore Open, scheduled to be held from tomorrow to Monday this year.

The 12-year old young gymnast Wohaimong, accompanied by former National Sports Council coach Iqbal Hossain, left Dhaka for Singapore Thursday afternoon to take part in the age-group category events, scheduled to begin Sunday.

Wohaimong has been a gymnastic student at Quantum school for the last eight years. His original home is situated in Bolipara union of Thanchi upazila in Bandarban, around 15 miles away from Bangladesh-Myanmar border. Around 15-20 minutes of trekking from Bolipara bazar through the hilly area will lead one to Aylma para, where Wohaimong was born. His parents - father Mong Ky Marma and mother Thui Wai Ching Marma - got their son admitted to Quantum when he was three and a half years old.

Iqbal, who retired as a gymnastics coach from NSC last year, informed that Wohaimong has won gold medal in every national youth competition in the last five years."The decision to send him there came suddenly. So the preparation has not been the best, considering the poor facilities we have at the NSC gymnasium. I'm still hopeful as the experience would be very helpful for his career."

Situated in Bandarban's Lama upazila, Quantum Cosmo School in-charge Saleh Ahmed informed Dhaka Tribune that the majority of the students are orphans but Wohaimong is an exception. The school currently has a total of 80 budding gymnasts with 60% of them comprising ethnic communities of Chittagong Hill Tracts, he added.

When Wohaimong joined Quantum, there were only seven to eight gymnasts. In the last eight years, Wohaimong used to meet his parents, who live their life through jhum cultivation, once every three months on average. Wohaimong usually gets vacation twice in a year, one during the traditional Sangrai festival of Marma community and the other coming after the final examinations in December. He currently reads in class six after obtaining GPA-5 in PSC exam.
