Zahid Ahsan Russel announced zero tolerance against corruption in the sports arena following his first visit to the National Sports Council Tuesday as the new NSC chairman after taking oath as the new State Minister for Youth and Sports the previous day.

“I announce zero tolerance against corruption. I wouldn’t get involved in any corruption, and never allow anyone to do so. I have worked in my area, now I want to devote myself for bigger purpose throughout the country,” said Russel, who was elected Member of Parliament (Gazipur-2) for the fourth time.

Russel also restated his commitment of providing long-term training opportunities to the athletes.

“There is no alternative of training. There are many young talents in the country, but can’t reach the limelight due to lack of practice. We will sit with every federation, and give it top priority,” he said.

“There have been developments in sports sector in the last 10 years, there are observations too. We set the priorities first for one year, and gave most priority to those events which have the possibilities to bring success for the country. There will be short and long-term plans,” explained Russel.

He said he would try to bridge the gap between the NSC and the federations.

The new minister had served as the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for the Youth and Sports Ministry for the last 10 years, and believes the experience would help him to implement the government’s manifestos for the further development of sports.

“It’s good that the most of the faces in the sports arena are known to me. We want to make the sports ministry and NSC a role model through team work and team spirit. We have many dreams in sports, but can’t fulfill them due to lack of funds here. I want to visit finance ministry at least once a week, and try to get more financial support for sports,” he said.

Recently a rape case involving the weightlifting federation shocked the sports arena.

Russel also pledged to work in improving the environment for female athletes, and also the surroundings of Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.

Russel earlier talked about the importance of building standard football stadiums outside the capital.

The Minister reinstated the importance of infrastructure.

He said, “Infrastructural development is a must to develop any game. There are also many existing stadiums which need to be taken care of too. I will visit the venues myself and start the work after setting the priority,” he concluded.
