US Open Highlights 5th day: Sharapova advances into last 16, Cilic ousted

Third seed Garbine Muguruza and two-time champion Venus Williams secured fourth round spots with convincing victories at the US Open on Friday. Wimbledon champion Muguruza barely broke sweat on her way to a 6-1 6-1 victory over 31st seed Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova. The 23-year-old Spaniard will next face 13th seed Czech Petra Kvitova, who needed beat France's Caroline Garcia 6-0 6-4. American Venus Williams, who won two titles at Flushing Meadows in 2000 and 2001, advanced to the final 16 with a 6-3 6-4 win over Greek Maria Sakkari in front of a partisan Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd. The 37-year-old has now reached the last 16 in every grand slam this year, a feat she last achieved in 2010. In the evening session, former world number one Maria Sharapova produced another powerful display to beat American teenager Sofia Kenin 7-5 6-2. Former champion Marin Cilic and American John Isner suffered shock exits, leaving the bottom half of the men's draw without a top 10 seeded heading into the fourth round. Croatian fifth seed Cilic, who won the title in 2014, committed 80 unforced errors in his 4-6 7-5 7-5 6-4 loss to Argentine Diego Schwartzman. Isner, seeded 10th, was also erratic during his 6-4 6-3 7-6(5) defeat to German Mischa Zverev. Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov moved into the last 16 when Briton Kyle Edmund retired with injury. He will next meet 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain. "Carreno Busta is an unbelievable player," said Shapovalov. "He's another guy that's been on the tour for a while and he's got a lot of experience. "He plays big, he goes for his shots, so it's going to be a tough matchup but I've been playing some tough guys and I've been doing well and hopefully I can do well in the next round." SEVASTOVA STORMS INTO FOURTH ROUND - Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, the women's 16th seed, beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-2 6-3, helped by her opponent's 29 unforced errors. QUERREY DOWNS MOLDOVA'S ALBOT - American 17th seed Sam Querrey beat unseeded Radu Albot 4-6 6-2 6-4 6-4. - Querrey struck 19 aces and 49 winners as he closed out the match in just over two hours. VENUS DOWNS SAKKARI TO ADVANCE TO ROUND FOUR - Venus Williams beat Greece's Maria Sakkari 6-3 6-4 to advance to the fourth round, where she will face Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

- Venus, the ninth seed, struggled with her serve against Sakkari, but had enough in her locker to get past her unseeded opponent in an hour and 15 minutes. ANDERSON CRUISES PAST CORIC IN STRAIGHT SETS - Big-serving South African Kevin Anderson, the men's 28th seed, beat unseeded Croatian Borna Coric 6-4 6-3 6-2. - Anderson, who dished out 12 aces and 32 winners without dropping his serve, faces Italy's Paolo Lorenzi in the fourth round. POUILLE GETS PAST KUKUSHKIN IN FOUR SETS - Frenchman Lucas Pouille, the men's 16th seed, beat Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 to set up a fourth-round clash with Argentine Diego Schwartzman. GOERGES DOWNS KRUNIC IN STRAIGHT SETS - German Julia Goerges, the women's 30th seed, beat Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic 6-3 6-3 in the third round. - Goerges struck six aces and 27 winners during the match, and will face unseeded American Sloane Stephens next. MUGURUZA MAKES SHORT WORK OF RYBARIKOVA - Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, the third seed, cruised into the fourth round with a dominant 6-1 6-1 victory over Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova.
