The qualifiers of the Walton 32nd Bangladesh International Junior Tennis Championship, organised by Bangladesh Tennis Federation, began Sunday in Dhaka.
There was good news for the Bangladesh fans as local lad Azizul Hakim Abir beat South Korea’s Jangil Kim 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the boys’ singles, but another local boy Faruk Hossain tasted defeat.
Besides Azizul and Faruk, Bangladesh will be represented in the boys’ event by Jewel Rana, Shadhin Hossain, Rakib Hossain, Arnab Saha, Faridur Reza, Mehedi Hasan, Zubin Omar, Mohammad Sakib, Tamim bin Jahid, Mohammad Sohel, Nur Alam, Ranjit Sarkar, Yaman Ahmed Jim and Imon Islam.
In the girls’ category, the host nation will be represented by Jerina Sultana Jolly, Rinvi Akter Tripti, Raina, Lami Suchona Fabiha, Mashfiya Afrin and Sushmita Sen.
A total of 53 male and 38 female players from 13 countries, including host Bangladesh, will participate in the event.

This competition is part of the International Tennis Federation’s U-18 Group 5 World Junior Ranking.
There will be four categories in the tournament – boys’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ singles and girls’ doubles.
In the boys’ singles category, India’s Aryan Javeri has been seeded first while China’s Wenmao Li was seeded second.
In the girls’ singles event, America’s Anaya Kothakota has been seeded first while India’s Dipshikha Sriram was seeded second.
The opening ceremony will be held Monday at Ramna Tennis Complex in Dhaka.
