How do the Bangladeshi companies operate data centre business here?
Well, in Bangladesh, we don’t need any licence to operate data centre business which is very unfortunate. There are only a mandatory few rules. But on the whole, anyone can operate such business. So, this is not safe in any normal or commercial building. Even in Hi-Tech Park, data centre zone is separated from other zones.
What is your advice to any newly formed company?
Many companies do not know about their data analyses and growth. Before launching any company, you should have a plan on data analysis. I always suggest all to appoint local skilled manpower, and think about alternative.
Please talk about the Data Centre Technologies Summit in Dhaka?
Well. There were two consecutive summits in 2016 and 2017. It is a new initiative, but the response was very good. Over 50 applicants submitted their curriculum vitae. If they are eligible, they will get job. They can get job even in overseas country’s also. Many visited the summit. Professionals including CFO and CTO level officials, certification companies, government systems analysts paid a visit to the summit. We got international branding through this as well.
What is the prospect of data centre business in Bangladesh?
Day by day the extent of IT-enabled services is on the rise. As communication increases, requirement of data follows suit. If you look at the company like Uber, you will see it has a huge data centre for smooth operation. We have a huge data centre business worth Tk10,000 crore. This is high time we got to prepare ourselves, or else, foreign companies will grab our local data centre business.
Who inspired you to arrange the summit?
I participated in many international summits held in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Belgium, Singapore and Hong Kong. This helped me learn a lot. At one stage I thought arranging such an international summit in Bangladesh would help many people reap the benefit. Thus I went for it.
Does data service influence our daily life?
In modern world, data is very important to all. Failing to provide data services promptly can lead to disaster and bring sufferings for hundreds of people. Our National Identification information, BRTA driving licence information, passport information and information about banks or financial institutions are all stored in data centre. So, you can really understand the importance of data.
Which academic background do you prefer for data centre job?
Actually, you don’t need to be an engineer to manage data centre. Initially, your interest is more important than any of your previous backgrounds. We need multi-disciplinary people. A proper training can make them eligible for this job.
What is Bangladesh’s status in data centre business?
We are not in a matured stage in data centre business. The summit held in Dhaka was arranged only for our local company policy makers. Students and executives were not allowed to enter the summit. Over 20 overseas companies as well as six local companies took part in the summit. Foreign participants, lets say, were more than 100. There were 51 technical sessions in which over 40 speakers from home and abroad delivered their speech.
How can we get certification?
Uptime Institute is the IT industry’s most trusted and adopted global standard for the proper design, build and operation of data centers. If any Bangladeshi companies are certified by this institute, it will be trusted. They are planning to certify a few Bangladeshi companies. Bangladesh Computer Council and bKash have got initial approval by Uptime.
Bangladesh government’s tier 4 data centre also got Uptime approval which is one of the biggest data centre in the world.
Do you think certification is enough for any institutions or person?
Certification is not the only objective of any institutions or person. We need skilled professionals who can teach quality education in the industry. Besides, we should also emphasise auditing and proper monitoring to ensure quality training in data centre business.
