Muktijoddha handed an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to last year’s champions Abahani to finish their Grameenphone Bangladesh Premier League campaign on a high note at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
It was also the last match for four time champions Abahani, who lost their last two games to finish with 29 points, which puts them in second position behind Sheikh Russell. Abahani lost their previous game 1-3 to Team BJMC. Sheikh Jamal, who are on 28 points, can move push Abahani further down the final table if they defeat Brothers Union in their last encounter.
Muktijoddha went up in the 2nd minute when Nigerian midfielder Joseph Ozurumba beat Abahani keeper Sohel with a well placed shot after the goalie had punched away a scorcher from forward Md. Biplob.
Midfielder Zahed Parvez Chowdhury beat Sohel in the far post to double the lead in the 19th minute. Abahani pulled one back in the 42nd minute when midfielder Abdul Baten Majumder Komol tapped the ball in off a left flank cross from Ghanaian midfielder Awudu Ibrahim.
Mukti’s Nigerian hitman Ozurumba capitilised on a through pass from Tyson Silva to place the ball in from the box for his second goal in the 60th minute and midfielder Azmal Hossain Biddyut sealed the victory for Muktijoddha in injury time.
The win took Muktijoddha to 19 points from their 16 matches, and they finish sixth in the nine team league.
