Police seek fresh 12-day remand for Rana

Police yesterday asked for another 12 days to question Sohel Rana, the owner of Rana Plaza which collapsed on April 24 killing 819 people, in connection with two cases filed against him for the possession of contraband drugs and weapon.

Investigation officers of the two cases, Detective Branch Inspector Wahiduzzaman Mollah and Sub-Inspector Towhid Islam, filed the pleas with Dhaka’s Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court.The court’s additional public prosecutor, Anowarul Kabir Babul, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Senior Judicial Magistrate Toybul Hasan passed the order and said that the prayers would be heard after completion of the ongoing 15-day remand of Rana.”

The two cases were filed by DB Inspector Mir Shahin Shah Pervez against Rana with Dhamrai Police Station.

Meanwhile, capital development authority Rajuk’s official Md Helal Uddin filed a case against Rana on April 24 for violating building code. On the same day, Savar police station’s sub-inspector Wali Ashraf Khan filed another case against Rana, his father Abdul Khalek and the owners of the garment factories housed in Rana plaza for involuntarily causing loss of lives and damages.

On April 24, the eight-storied building, which housed five garment factories, a shopping complex and a branch of Brac Bank, collapsed trapping over 2,400 people and killing 819 others.

Savar engineer sent to jail

A Dhaka Court yesterday sent to jail, Savar local engineer Abdur Razzak Khan, after he was produced on completion of his four days remand, in connection with the Rana Plaza collapse cases.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Wasim Sheikh passed the order, as police did not submit any further remand prayer for quizzing him.

In yesterday’s forwarding report, the investigation officer said: “The information derived from the accused is being verified. So, he needs to be confined in jail until the investigation of the case is over.”

Earlier on May 5, the same court granted a 4 day police remand against Abdur Razzak.

Following the collapse of Rana plaza on April 24, which killed at least 819 people, Savar police station Sub-Inspector Wali Ashraf Khan filed a case against the accused under penal code and Md Helal Uddin, while authorized officer of RAJUK, filed another case under the Building Construction Act-1952 on April 25.
