Leather industry seeks budget allocation for ETP

Leather industry stakeholders yesterday urged Finance Minister AMA Muhith to allocate a fund in the upcoming budget for installation of a central effluent treatment plant (CETP) at the proposed new industrial zone for leather industry in Savar.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Tanners Association and Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods & Footwear Exporters’ Association also sought a compensation package for transferring their factories from Hazaribagh to Savar.

They raised the demands at a pre-budget meeting with the minister at his ministry, also urging re-introduction of export incentives to boost exports.

Muhith assured them of considering the demands ahead of placing the budget in parliament.

Earlier, the tanners’ association demanded of the National Board of Revenue to withdraw the provision of 5% income tax and 15% value added tax (VAT) on finished leather.

BFLLGFEA Chairman Haji Md Belal Hossain, BTA Chairman Md Shaheen Ahamed and BTA General Secretary Muhammad Abdul Hai were present at the meeting.
