Bangladesh, Philippines to form joint chamber
A joint chamber of Bangladesh and the Philippines will be formed to boost trade and investment between the two countries. “I had a meeting with local businessmen yesterday (Sunday) and they agreed to form the chamber,” Philippines ambassador to Dhaka Bahnarim Abu Guinmla told the Dhaka Tribune at the state guest house Padma yesterday. The current two-way trade is close to $100m and it could double or treble within a short period of time, he said. Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque said the scope is still untapped and the government is trying to increase trade with the Southeast Asian nation. “Manila is an important country in the region and having a robust engagement with the country can open other cooperation avenues too,” he said. The Philippines envoy is scheduled to leave Dhaka today after serving in Dhaka for three years. Before his departure, he signed his last agreement on cultural exchange yesterday. Cultural secretary of the government and the ambassador signed the memorandum of understanding in presence of Bangladesh foreign secretary.
