A farewell to arms

  • Published at 09:49 am May 17th, 2013

It is high time our law enforcement agencies step up their efforts to put a stop to the flow of guns and ammunition into our nation, so as to halt gun violence before it starts.

Rab and police forces have already made headway towards apprehending those who are smuggling in the guns, with the search ongoing for the patrons behind these smugglers.

While it is heartening to see these actions, the growing demand by criminals for more guns makes it imperative that stringent measures are put in place to block the supply.

At present, weapons used most often include knives, bombs, pepper spray, stones, and bricks, among others. If there is a ready availability of guns, they will more than likely become the weapon of choice for gangsters and criminals here, and that’s a terrifying thought for the public.

So far, gun violence is still at a relatively infant stage, as we have not yet seen the kind of gun violence that has existed, and still exists, in South Africa, the United States, and some countries of South America. That day, however, may not be far away.

The government’s hold over its cadres and criminals is already tenuous. If the latter gain easy access to guns and ammunition, the government may lose control over them altogether.

The government would do well to prevent this scenario at all costs, and stem the kind of gun violence that has already devastated other regions of the world.

After all, upholding the safety of the public is their duty.
