FM stresses responsible role of foreign buyers

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni has underscored the importance of ethical buying and responsible behaviour by foreign buyers to ensure labour welfare.

“An ethical pricing and responsible role of the buyers are extremely important for advancing factory safety and labour welfare,” she said during her meeting with US Congressman Joseph Crowley in Washington on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the ministry.

Congressman Crawley is the co-chair of Bangladesh Caucus in the US Congress.

The foreign minister informed the lawmaker about recent steps the government has taken to ensure labour rights in the country.

The cabinet has approved the amendments to the 2006 labour law, which is expected to be passed in the upcoming session of parliament, she said.

After the Rana Plaza collapse, the government undertook a baseline survey to find factories housed in faulty buildings and to take punitive measures against the violators of building and fire safety codes, the minister informed the US congressman.

“She expressed her hope that within a year or so, Bangladesh’s trading partners would see a positive change in its factories and find those compliant with the required standards,” the press statement said.

Congressman Crawley also inquired about the status of cases filed against certain labour leaders, on which the minister then briefed him.
