A Chittagong court, on Monday, sentenced three to life in prison for beating a youth to death in Chittagong’s Mirsarai upazila in 2006.
The court also fined the trio Tk10,000 each.
The convicts were Syed Ahmad, 65, and his two sons – Jahangir Alam, 35, and Didarul Alam, 30 – according to court officials. The court of District and Session Judge Md Abdul Kudus Bhuiyan passed the verdict on Monday after presenting Syed Ahmad before the court. His sons abscond since receiving news about the life sentence.
Public Prosecutor of Chittagong, Abul Hashem, told the Dhaka Tribune that, as the charges brought against the accused were proved beyond any doubt, the court sentenced them to life in prison according to the sections 302 and 304 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
According to the case document, the two fugitives beat the victim, Md Sarwar Hossain, in front of a tea stall at Katagaon village in the Mirsarai upazila on February 19, 2006, following previous enmity.
Later, Sarwar was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the next day.
Ali Hossain, father of the victim, lodged a case with the Mirsarai police station in this connection on the same day. The police submitted the charge-sheet against the trio on November 11, 2006 and the court framed charges against them on January 31, 2010.
