President Abdul Hamid on Friday urged all countrymen "irrespective of all parties and opinions on this [Eid] day, to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh," drawing inspiration from the teachings of Eid-ul- Fitr.
He made the statement to journalists while hosting a reception at Bangabhaban in the morning.
The president sent greeting to all the people of the world on the occasion, especially every Bangladeshi citizen, and wished happy and prosperous life.
"The holy month of Ramadan teaches us to get rid of greediness, backbiting, falsehood and fraudulence," the president said.
He urged all to take a firm oath to draw from the spirit of holy Ramadan to become a true human being.
Earlier, the president offered his Eid prayers along with hundreds of people from all walks of life at the National Eidgah Maidan in the city at 8:30am.
Abdul Hamid and his wife Rashida Khanom hosted the reception for the top tier of the government, elite of the society and diplomats.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Chief Justice Md Muzzammel Hossain, ministers, advisers to the prime minister and state ministers joined the reception.
In addition, judges of the Supreme Court, members of parliament, leaders of different political parties, editors, chiefs of the three services, secretaries, vice chancellors of several universities, educationists, recipients of national awards, senior journalists, writers, poets, litterateurs, representatives of the business community, religious personalities, artistes, high civil and military officials joined the reception.
Dean of the diplomatic corps, ambassadors and high commissioners of different countries and chiefs of international agencies also attended the reception.
The president and his wife welcomed the guests, exchanged Eid greetings and wished them a prosperous life.
