Ecnec approves Tk2,007cr projects

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) yesterday approved five development projects involving Tk2,007.68 crore.

The projects include an allocation of Tk828.56 crore for food and riverbank management. Of which, the government will bear Tk186.16 crore and Tk642.40 crore will come as project assistance.

The approval came at a meeting of the government’s highest policy-making body at the NEC conference room in the capital with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Bangladesh Water Development Board has been entrusted with the implementation of the project titled Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Investment Programme (Tranche-I) by December, 2018.

“The project mainly aims to protect the mass people and strategic points from river erosion,” Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal told reporters after the meeting.

Of the total project cost, the government will provide Tk997.28 crore from the national exchequer and Tk1,010.40 crore will come as project assistance

Another project approved by the Ecnec is Irrigation Management Improvement (IMIP) for Muhuri Irrigation Project involving Tk457.36 crore.

Bangladesh Water Development Board will implement the project by June, 2019.

The meeting also gave nod to ‘Comprehensive Water Management for West Gopalganj’ project with a total cost of Tk122.14 crore.

Bangladesh Water Development Board will implement the project by June, 2016.

Construction of postal department’s headquarters was also approved by the Ecnec with an outlay of Tk54.72 crore.

Department of Postal is scheduled to implement the project by June, 2017.

In addition, the Ecnec also approved two revised projects “Construction of Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive” and “Construction of PC Girder Bridge on River Sanghu on Chimbuk-Ruma Road” aimed at boosting tourism.

The planning minister said the government has taken the projects to promote the country’s tourism sector.
