Leaders of the two readymade garment workers’ federations in separate programmes have urged the RMG factory owners to pay the wages and bonus of the workers well before the upcoming Eid festival.
“As we have seen that the RMG workers suffer from uncertainty over getting their dues before any of the festivals, we are urging the factory owners and the government to take necessary steps to pay due wages and bonus to the workers well before Eid,’’ said Abul Hossain, president of Textile Garment Workers Federation (TGWF), yesterday while addressing a press briefing in the capital.
Tapan Shaha, general secretary of TGWF also requested the factory owners to pay wages and bonus of the workers by 25th of Ramadan month to avert any sort of untoward incidents.
He also alleged that the workers are not really allowed to form trade unions and workers are being harassed physically for forming unions.
Tapan also urged the government to implement the labour law to ensure workers’ rights including freedom of association and workplace safety.
Addressing a rally in front of the National Press Club in the city, workers’ leaders of six women organisations also demanded Eid bonus and salary by 20th of the Ramadan.
Shamima Akhter Sirin, president of Bangladesh Garment Textile Sramik Federation, demanded the wages for the current month before Eid along with festival bonus.
