Detective Branch (DB) officials arrested four members of a robbers' gang and seized two pistols and seven rounds of bullets from their possession on Saturday.
The arrested are Md Asattar, 45, Md Asattar Dhali alias Rak Hossain, 32, Md Emdad Hossain alias Emdad, 30 and their leader Md Zulhas Akon alias Zulhas, 48.
They were held in a drive led by Deputy Commissioner (east) Jahangir Hossain Matubbor and Additional Deputy Commissioner AHM Abdur Rakib around 10:35pm from Gor-a-Shaheed Mazaar situated in capital's Azimpur area.
The robbers used to loot houses and markets, said DB officials.
Following their statements, a team led by Assistant Police Commissioner of Demra zone Mainul Islam, nabbed another member – Kamal alias Picchi Kamal, 48 – from Mirhazirbagh around 11pm and seized a shotgun from his possession.
Two cases have been filed with Darus Salam police station and Lalbagh police station in these connections.
Meanwhile, locals beat four suspected robbers in Chawkbazaar area and handed them to police yesterday.
The four were identified as Sumon, 20, Iqbal, 21, Liton, 20, and Shamim, 20.
Chawbazaar police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Aziz said: “One Saiful's mobile was robbed in the area on Saturday. In this connection, Saiful along with his friends beat up the four.”
The arrested received primary medical treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Locals beat Maruf Hossain, 30, at Doinik Bangla Square in Motijheel yesterday for involvement with a mugging. He was later handed over to police.
Rezaul Islam, who works as an accountant, said: “Three muggers stopped my way to Bangladesh Bank and tried to snatch my bag with Tk85,000 inside. At that moment, locals came to my help and beat them up. While two muggers managed to escape, one was caught and handed to police.”
Motijheel police station Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin said Maruf was sent to DMCH for treatment.
