Unidentified carjackers early yesterday shot dead the driver of a car at Banasree in the capital and stole it.
Faruk Khan, 28, hailing from Bagerhat, was shot near Banasree Boro Masjid around 3am when he was on his way to deliver the car to its owner.
Iqbal, a car importer who imported the stolen vehicle, told the Dhaka Tribune that the reconditioned car had arrived at Mongla Port on Sunday evening before it was brought to Dhaka.
He said Faruk, who had been working with him for four years, was heading for the Rampura residence of Khokon, the buyer of the car.
“We deliver cars to showrooms as well as to houses. We set off from Mongla together but headed to different directions after reaching Dhaka. Some 25 cars were imported in the shipment. Some of those were being taken to showrooms while the others to the buyers directly,” he said.
“Some four to five people who came in a microbus intercepted Faruk’s car and they handcuffed him before gunning down him on the spot,” he added.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
A case was filed by Faruk’s brother Badshah Kha against unnamed people with Rampura police station, said SI of the police station Md Mamun.
“Some documents we found on the scene helped us identify Faruk,” he said. No one was arrested for the murder or carjacking.
Iqbal claimed easy availability and poor monitoring of the sale of law enforcement equipment, such as handcuffs and police uniforms, in the market makes it easy for criminals to use them for committing crimes.
