Police arrested a 60-year-old man in possession of a revolver at Karwan Bazar in the capital at such a time yesterday when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her convoy was passing the area.
The firearm was loaded with seven rounds of bullets, Tejgaon police station OC Mazaharul Islam said.
He said the PM was passing the Karwan Bazar area around 10am, when Idris Ali, who lives in Moghbazar’s Dilu Road area, was found to be making suspicious gestures in front of Ambar Shah Mosque in the area. Police immediately intercepted, checked his body. They found the revolver loaded with seven rounds of bullets in his possession and detained him, he said. Soon after the elderly man was detained, Idris claimed that he owned the revolver legally, which the Police could not confirm immediately.
The Dhaka Tribune contacted OC Mazhar around 10pm again yesterday and learned from him that the ownership of the firearm was legal. Until the filing of this report, the elderly man was still under detention at Tejgaon police station.
