Update : 14 Nov 2014, 08:35 AM

The government has submitted a progress report on labour rights situation in Bangladesh to the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

Commerce ministry sent the report to the US authorities yesterday, said officials.

Earlier, the USTR asked Bangladesh to inform about what it has done to improve labour standards in the country on the basis of 16 action plans.

Recently, American Federation of Labour and Congress of Industrial Organisations (AFL-CIO) made new allegation of labour rights violation in Banglades and demanded the USTR not to restore GSP facility.

AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the United States, said Bangladeshi telecom sector was also violating labour rights.

The allegation was forwarded to Bangladesh authorities by the USTR through email in mid-October.

USTR sought explanation in this regard from the Bangladesh government and asked to let it know within November 15.

Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said Bangladesh sent labour standard report on Thursday in response to the USTR letter.

He said there would be no hearing on restoration of GSP facility in the US market.

The USTR will review the matter at end of this month or beginning of next month, he said.

A commerce ministry official said they presented the latest situation of 16 action plans.
