Teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) forming a human chain expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation process of the killing of professor AKM Shafiul Islam.
They said police failed to arrest the mastermind of the killing Anwar Hossain Uzzal, convener of Juba Dal Rajshahi district unit, whose name was revealed by other arrestees at a press conference in the capital on November 22. They also demanded exemplary punishment to the real killers of Shafiul Islam.
They said till yesterday evening, a total of about 17 suspects were held by law enforcers in connection with the case, but two members of Ansar-al-Islam Bangladesh Shariful Islam and Raihanul Islam who took the responsibilities of the murder in their facebook page ‘Ansar al Islam Bangladesh-2’ were not made accused in the murder case. It was mysterious, they claimed.
However, teachers of the university said the masterminds behind the murder were yet to be identified and efforts of the police to bring the real culprits to the book was not satisfactory.
They also vowed tougher movements if the culprits were not brought to book quickly.
Over 350 teachers and students under the banner of Sociology Department formed the human chain presided over by Sociology department’s Prof Md Sirajul Islam.
“We are still in the dark about the overall progress of the investigation,” said Prof Islam said.
He also hoped that the real culprits would be brought to the book as soon as possible.
Later, they brought out a procession on the campus that paraded across different points of the campus.
They said it was high time to punish the murderers. If the real killers are not punished on time this type of incidents will occur again in future, the speakers added.
RU Teachers Association (RUTA) President Kamrul Hasan Majumder, Chairman of Sociology and Anthropology Department Prof Wardatul
Akmam and Prof Faizar Rahman, among others, also joined the protest programme.
However, Iftekhayer Alam, assistant commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, told the Dhaka Tribune that they had been working seriously over the murder case.
Prof Shafiul Islam was hacked to death by some miscreants near his house in Chouddapai area, adjacent to the campus, on November 15.
