Abahani rode on the strikes of their Hungarian duo to go past Chittagong Abahani 2-0 in the Manyavar Bangladesh Premier League at Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
Forward Szabolcs Csorba and midfielder Gabor Demjen rescued the traditional Sky Blues again with two late strikes. The two Hungarian recruits have now accounted for seven of the eight goals scored by Abahani in this campaign with Csorba netting four and Gabor notching three. The lack of local finishers overawed Abahani in the entirety of the first half before the Hungarians rose to the occasion.
Csorba’s intelligence helped Abahani break the deadlock in the 73rd minute. Picking up a Shakil Ahmed through pass, Csorba placed the ball into the far post with a side-footed effort.
Demjen sealed the fate of the match six minutes later with a spot-kick. Chittagong Abahani’s Guinean defender Camara Mamado’s side tackle on Csorba forced the Hungarian down in the middle of the box and Demjen stepped up to send Chittagong Abahani goalkeeper Mohammed Ershad the wrong way.
Abahani took their tally to seven points from three matches while Chittagong Abahani are yet to open their account.
In the other match of the day, Muktijoddha powered past Team BJMC 3-1. Egyptian midfielder Fekri Zejada drilled a low free-kick into the near post from 20 yards out to put Muktis ahead in the 56th minute while Ghanaian defender Abbas Inusah headed in the second in the 58th minute. Senegalese marksman Camara Sarba headed in the third in the 78th minute as Muktijoddha sealed the fate of the match. In stoppage time, Nabib Newaz Jibon netted the consolation for BJMC.
Muktijoddha have nine points from three matches while Team BJMC remained on their previous tally of one.
