Brothers draw with Jamal, Muktis held by Rahmatganj

Brothers Union continued to be the “nemesis” of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club as the Oranje outfit held the defending champions in a goalless draw in the Manyavar Bangladesh Premier League at Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

Sheikh Jamal came into the match on the back of wins in all of their first six matches in the top-flight but Brothers were also flying high with two credible victories against Mohammedan and Muktijoddha before losing 1-0 against Abahani in their last encounter.

The charges of Syed Naeemuddin concentrated on their defence from the very beginning and allowed very little space to Emeka Darlington, Wedson Anselme and Landing Darboe. The first half had barely any action.

After resumption, Brothers goalkeeper Roghu stretched to his full-limit to punch away Wedson’s  cracking right-footer. Three minutes later, Sheikh Jamal custodian Hemel did the same to fist away a volley from Brothers midfielder Shariful to safety. Luck, however, was not in favour of Sheikh Jamal as Wedson’s solo effort enabled him to go past the defence but his right-footer hit the Brothers cross-piece.

Sheikh Jamal have 19 points from seven matches while Brothers have 11 from the same number of outings.

In the other match of the day at the same venue, Rahmatganj’s young forward Mannaf Rabbi scored a stoppage-time equaliser against Mukitijoddha in a 1-1 draw. Muktijoddha skipper Enamul notched his seventh league goal in the 69th minute but Rabbi’s late equaliser spoiled Muktijoddha’s party.
