Women leaders awarded

As part of the second edition of "Yellow Presents Inspiring Women Award" that took place on Women's Day this month, 19 awards were handed over across 16 broad categories to women that have excelled at different fronts and sectors in Bangladesh. First introduced in 2015 by Bangladesh Brand Forum, the award was designed to honour female leaders as well inspire other women to follow female role models.    “As a visual artist myself, I am humbled to admit that I've always been encouraged by my family and peers to follow my dreams and let myself grow. Over the years I realised that not all women are as blessed or even as privileged as I have been and this really got me thinking,” explains Nazia Andaleeb Preema, president of Women in Leadership. Attending the Ekushey Shahitya Award a few years ago, Preema realised there weren't enough awards being given to women leaders, entrepreneurs and role models and she felt that there is a “pressing need to really address this gap.” Spurred by this idea, Preema decided to create a platform that both rewards and encourages women leaders.

“I wanted to be here today, on behalf of Yellow, the retail division of Beximco, because I wanted to honour the inspiring women of Bangladesh,” expressed Syed Naved Husain, CEO of Beximco at the event.    “What I'm really very impressed with is the courageous and brave attitude of women in general, and their strong growth coming forward in all sectors of life - whether it's economical, political or social. The unsung heroes of Bangladesh in my opinion are the three million women who work in the garment sector. Bangladeshi women, rapidly more so than any part of South Asia, are coming out of the outdated attitudes they had towards women. These garment workers are impacting the lives of 150 million of people of Bangladesh. You can see the major contribution these women have made into what is really the bloodline of Bangladesh's economy. That's the economics sector, coming to the political sector it's very interesting that the PM, the speaker of the assembly, leader of the opposition, and the leader of largest political party are all women. So having these women leaders has put Bangladesh way ahead of most countries in the subcontinent, it's something all women should celebrate,” he added.    The winners were selected by a jury that consisted of N E A Shibly, CEO and chief consultant, Pro-Edge Associates, M Zulfiquar Hussain, CEO and lead consultant, Grow N Excel, Masud Rahman, president, Cancham, Shah Masud Imam, COO, Polar Ice Cream, Asif Iqbal, executive director, marketing, Meghna Group of Industries and Tariqul Haque, Enroute International Limited. The winners were chosen after a thorough selection process and month long nomination.    “It feels wonderful to be awarded for being a female entrepreneur. This is my first individual award, and I'm honoured to be able to serve as a role model for so many women,” expressed Sangeeta Khan, Yellow Inspiring Female Entrepreneur awardee. “I really think women should believe in themselves and have confidence in their dreams. Dream big, but always make sure your dreams have a goal and everyday, tell yourself you are the things you dream to be, and success will be yours,” she adds.    The gala ceremony celebrated everyone from women in journalism to women athletes. Later a bi-monthly publication was launched at the event followed by cultural performances by Warda Rihab (also the recipient of the Inspiring Female Performer), Shaian and Shumi from Chirkut music band. Taking things up a notch was the "It's a She Thing" performance, the adaptation of a world renowned play.    Presented by Yellow, the award was organised this year in association with Le Meridien Dhaka. Parachute and RFL were the event partners. The event was also supported by FICCI, MCCI, Dhaka Tribune and the Daily Ittefaq as media partners, Masthead PR as PR partner, Gtv as TV partner, Webable as social media partner, and Colors FM 101.6 as radio partner.
