Karnaphuli tunnel construction likely to begin Oct 10
The construction work of much-awaited Karnaphuli Tunnel in Chittagong will begin on October 10 this year. Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to lay the foundation stone of the tunnel along with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Xi Jinping will pay visit to Bangladesh from October 10 to October 13, said a Foreign Ministry official. During his stay in Dhaka, Chinese president will also meet President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Economic, trade, investment and military issues will have in the priority list. Iftekhar Kabir, project director of the tunnel, said: “The proposed multi-lane tunnel will connect Chittagong city with the other side of the Karnaphuli River. It will also make connection between the proposed Asian Highway and the Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway aiming to make regional connectivity. “The proposed 3.5-km tunnel will be reduced distance between Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar by roadway, apart from easing the heavy port-city-bound traffic from Dhaka,” Kabir added. Road Transport and Bridges Ministry signed a deal with Chinese firm China Communication Construction Company (CCCC) Ltd for building the tunnel at a cost of $705 million last year in China.
