Shafik Rehman released from jail, admitted to hospital
He got out of the jail around 12:50pm on Tuesday. Kashimpur Central Jail 2 Superintendent Prashanta Kumar Banik confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

Sajib Onafis, Shafik's family friend and the assistant editor of Mouchakay Dheel magazine, told the Dhaka Tribune: “He was granted the bail on medical grounds. He is suffering from cardiac problem and diabetes.

“He has been admitted to Birdem Hospital around 3:30pm.”

On August 31, the Supreme Court granted bail to journalist Shafik Rehman in a case filed in connection with his alleged involvement in a plot to abduct and murder Joy. His bail will expire in three months or when  police submit an investigation report. On August 16, The Independent published a report quoting Shafik's son Shumit as saying he did not expect his father to live to "see the year out". The report stated that both Shafik and his wife were becoming physically ill because of the stress of Shafik's detention. “Quite honestly, I’m not sure if either of them will see the year out," Shumit told the Independent. Noted for his satirical columns, Shafik Rehman will have to surrender his passport precluding any possibility of foreign travel during his bail. On July 17, the Supreme Court allowed the journalist to file an appeal against the High Court order that rejected his bail petition in the case. The BNP-leaning journalist, a former editor of vernacular daily ‘Jay Jay Din’, was arrested from his Dhaka residence on April 16 in the case filed in August last year. Detectives claim to have found some confidential documents regarding Joy from Shafik’s residence.
