Rajshahi do the double over Dhaka
Rajshahi Kings recorded the second highest successful chase of the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20's fourth edition against Dhaka Dynamites at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in the port city on Monday. This was Rajshahi's second win of the competition in six matches and in the process, they did the double over the capital city outfit, having won the corresponding fixture by six wickets. It was all-rounder Samit Patel who once again shone for Rajshahi as he scored a match-winning 39-ball 75. Opening batsman Mominul Haque also chipped in with a quickfire half-century to help Rajshahi chase down their target of 183 with three wickets in hand after Dhaka posted 182/4. Needing nine runs in their final over, Rajshahi youngster Mehedi Hasan Miraz struck a boundary off paceman Matt Coles to snatch the win from Dhaka's grasp with only one delivery to spare. As a result, Dhaka suffered their third defeat in seven attempts. Chasing the target, Mominul, who smashed his third fifty of BPL 4, continued his good run of form. However, they kept losing wickets at the other end to almost lose the momentum provided by Mominul. Junaid Siddique (four) and Sabbir Rahman (seven) departed cheaply and things started to look difficult for Rajshahi until Samit walked into the middle. Samit, alongside Mominul, added exactly 100 runs for the third wicket. The latter was dismissed after scoring 56 off 42 balls with eight fours and a six. The 31-year old smashed two consecutive sixes off Shakib al Hasan but was soon dismissed while attempting a third one after making a blistering 75, featuring half a dozen sixes and five fours. Samit was instrumental in their first win of the tournament against Dhaka and he repeated the heroics yesterday to halt Dhaka's charge. All-rounder Dwayne Bravo was the pick of the Dhaka bowlers bagging three wickets while pacer Mohammad Shahid took two. Earlier, Dhaka posted a challenging total, riding on Kumar Sangakkara’s first fifty this BPL season. The stylish left-hander top-scored with 66 off 46 balls, studded with five fours and three sixes. His opening partner Mehedi Maruf added 35 while Seekkuge Prasanna remained unbeaten on a breezy 16-ball 34, composed of three sixes and a couple of fours. BRIEF SCORE Rajshahi Kings 184/7 in 19.5 overs (Sangakkara 66, Maruf 35, Prasanna 34) beat Dhaka Dynamites 182/4 (Samit 75, Mominul 56, Bravo 3/35) by three wickets WHAT THEY SAID Rajshahi Kings captain Darren Sammy Oh yeah, very much relieved. We have lost some crucial games from that position and for a moment [Monday] I thought I messed it up for my team when I got out. But it was good to see us coming over the line and that’s the momentum we need going forward. Oh well, we have a thing after every victory. We give the match-ball to the best performer and [Monday] we will give it to Mominul [Haque] although Samit [Patel] played really well. But I think Mominul showed the character after dropping two catches in the field. He would have been down. But the way he stood up, well, he is a short guy but he stood up really tall [Monday] and he put us in a position where we could have won the game. And gladly we did it. Dhaka Dynamites skipper Shakib al Hasan Obviously we didn’t play well, which is the biggest reason for our defeat. We were not able to play according to our strengths. Actually Mominul also played really well but the way Samit Patel batted, he totally took the game away from us. It is difficult to say but they played good cricket in both the games against us. Patel played brilliantly in both the matches. We have lost to a single player in both the games and it’s disappointing that we, the 11 players, lost to one person.
