Tazreen case languishes

Update : 24 Nov 2016, 08:20 AM
Proceedings against 13 accused, including Tazreen Fashions chairman Mahmuda Akhter and husband managing director Delwar Hossain, have stalled. During the deadly fire on November 24, 2012, managers and security guards allegedly told workers to return to work despite the fire, according to the charge sheet. The factory lacked a fire exit and unlawfully used a ground floor walkway as a warehouse. Additional public prosecutor Kazi Shahnara Yeasmin said: “The trial is stuck because witnesses are not coming to court … they are not at the addresses given to the investigating officer.” On December 22, 2013, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted homicide charges against 13 people in the case filed with Ashulia police station. On September 3, 2014, the First Additional District and Sessions Judges Court in Dhaka framed charges against the 13, including Delwar and his wife. Since then, the court has recorded the depositions of only five prosecution witnesses.
