Conspiracy to grab land using PM's and Bangabandhu's pictures in Gopalganj
A party conspired to illegally grab hold of government land by using a banner bearing the images of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Kotalipara upazila of Gopalganj. The incident occurred near the Manohar market of Radhaganj union of Kotalipara upazila on Saturday. Local people allotted the empty land beside the Manohar market bridge for the installation of a landing stage (ghat) for a local ashram. They put a signboard on the land for that purpose. However, Awami League General Secretary of Radhaganj Union, Shawkat Hossain and Senior Vice-President of Radhaganj Jubo League Mizanur Rahman removed the signboard and replaced it with their own banner. The Hindu population and the local people of Radhaganj have expressed their anger at the party's maneuver. According to Union Parishad member Harishad Baroi, the empty land beside the Manohar market is used to house thousands of guests every year when they come to visit the annual festival held at the ashram. A few days back, a Union Parishad member Debdulal Basu promised to build a landing stage using the empty land, and a signboard was erected. But soon afterwards, the local Awami League members removed the sign. Seeking anonymity, several traders from Manohar market said: "This is not the first time Awami League members have grabbed land by using the party's banner. They raise houses on these lands and sell it to traders. "We believe they are going to do the same this time as well," said the traders. Senior Vice-President of Radhaganj Jubo League Mizanur Rahman said: "We had a previous signboard on this land for building our offices. The signboard was removed while building the bridge. That is why we have erected a new banner now." However, Awami League General Secretary Farid Ahmed said that there have been no signboards or banners erected from the Radhaganj Awami League. If anyone has done it, it is of their personal initiative.
