Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the 2016 US presidential election, highly praised “Made in Bangladesh” shirts during an episode of the The Late Show, presented by legendary talk show host David Letterman at CBS in 2013. In one segment of the episode, Letterman showed him some of the shirts labelled with Trump’s apparel brand tags. Trump apparently was unsure about the source country of manufacturing, but Letterman later mentioned that those shirts were made in Bangladesh. Then Trump said: “Well, it’s good. We employed people in Bangladesh...they’ve to work too.” The latter part of the segment brought a bit of embarrassment for Trump since Letterman told him the Trump apparel-labelled neckties were made in China, the country which according to Trump has “stolen millions of jobs from the US soil.” Though Trump refrained from making any strong comments regarding the issue during the 2013 segment of the show, but he has made the American trade relationship with China a cornerstone issue of his campaign this year. According to his campaign website; Trump plans to achieve the following goals if he becomes president- --Bring China to the bargaining table by immediately declaring it a currency manipulator. --Protect American ingenuity and investment by forcing China to uphold intellectual property laws and stop their unfair and unlawful practice of forcing US companies to share proprietary technology with Chinese competitors as a condition of entry to China’s market. --Reclaim millions of American jobs and reviving American manufacturing by putting an end to China’s illegal export subsidies and lax labor and environmental standards. No more sweatshops or pollution havens stealing jobs from American workers. --Strengthen our negotiating position by lowering our corporate tax rate to keep American companies and jobs here at home, attacking our debt and deficit so China cannot use financial blackmail against us, and bolstering the US military presence in the East and South China Seas to discourage Chinese adventurism.
