Simon Paul Collis, the British ambassador to Saudi Arabia, has converted to Islam and performed Hajj this year.
Saudi writer and academic Fawziah Al-Bakr posted two photos of Collis and his wife on Twitter which showed him wearing ihram on Tuesday, reports Arab News
Collis replied to the post thanking Al-Bakr via his official twitter announcing, “I have converted to Islam after being in Muslim societies for 30 years, and right before getting married to Huda.”
The news of conversion came as a pleasant surprise for the 19,000 British pilgrims who were in the Kingdom to perform Hajj.
Many saw the ambassador's embrace of Islam as a vindication of the religion's universal appeal.
Since they were posted on the social media, the photos have gone viral.
Collis started working as British ambassador to Saudi Arabia in January last year after Sir John Jenkins retired. Collis joined the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1978 and has served mainly in the Arab world.
