Bangladeshi in Al Jazeera documentary detained in Malaysia

Malaysian Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has accused Al Jazeera of false reporting and demanded an apology for the report

Bangladeshi Md Rayhan Kabir has been detained by the Immigration Department in Malaysia on Friday.

The arrest was confirmed through a tweet from Malaysian National Security Council, according to Malaysian English language newspaper the Star.

Earlier, Rayhan had appeared in a report titled “Locked Up in Malaysia's Lockdown” by Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera. The report had examined the treatment of undocumented migrants in Malaysia during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rayhan had been transferred into police custody as of 6pm, according to  Bukit Aman CID deputy director Deputy Comm Mior Faridalatrash Wahid as quoted by Bernama TV.

Rayhan’s family in Narayanganj has urged the people of Bangladesh to stand beside him.

“My son has been arrested as he protested injustice [against migrant workers],” his father Shah Alam, who works at an apparel factory, said after the news of Rayhan’s arrest came in on Friday.
