Police is investigating if he has a valid working permit

A Bangladeshi man has been arrested in Malaysia for his involvement in flying a state flag upside down.

Acting on a tip-off from the public that an image of the Kedah state flag being flown upside down at a seafood restaurant was being shared on social media, Langkawi police raided the eatery in Pekan Pandak Mayah, Kuah, arresting its owner and a Bangladeshi employee on Saturday.

"We received this Information at about 6pm and a police team was dispatched to the restaurant to investigate,” said Langkawi district police chief Superintendent Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim, reports Bernama.

"Investigation revealed the owner had asked his Bangladeshi worker to put up the state flag. He, however, did not realize the worker had put up the state flag upside-down," he said.

Ibrahim said the case is being probed under Section 504 of the Penal Code (Malaysia) for intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

The police chief said that further investigation would also be carried out against the Bangladeshi to see if he has a valid working permit, reports Straits Times.

"This is because he only handed us a photocopy (of his permit) during the checks," he added.
