Two Jewish women, a mother, 57, and her daughter, 37, were beaten by a man who mistook them for being Muslims at a subway station in Queens, New York.
Police said the man, identified as Dimitrios Zias, 40, was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple counts of hate crime assault, reports the New York Post.
The mother and daughter were walking towards the exit of the 67th Avenue station in Forest Hills, after just getting off the M train, when Zias lobbed an insult at them on Wednesday at 2pm.
When the younger woman told the man to repeat what he had just said, he spat on her face and said: “Get out of my country you dirty Muslim.”
Zias then began punching both women in the face and body.
The two women refused medical attention since they were not seriously injured.
Officials say Zias was previously arrested in 2015, for aiming his mobile phone up a woman’s skirt at a Manhattan department store.
