US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have greeted the people of South and Southeast Asian communities celebrating the beginning of the New Year in their culture or religion.

In a post shared on the US president’s accounts across different social media platforms on Wednesday, the couple sent their warmest wishes to not just the Bengalis on Pohela Boishakh, but also the people from various communities across the US who are celebrating Boishakh, Navratri, Sankranti or any other New Year this week.

“Happy Aluth Avurudda, Happy Bihu, Happy Cheti Chand, Happy Gudi Padwa, Happy Khmer New Year, Happy Navreh, Happy Pohela Boishakh, Happy Pana Sankranti, Happy Pi Mai, Happy Puthandu, Happy Rongali Bihu, Happy Songkran, Happy Tamil New Year, Happy Ugadi, and Happy Vishu! In this season of hope, we are wishing this New Year brings you and your families prosperity and light,” read the post.

Pohela Boishakh, the first day of Bangla month Boishakh, marks the first day of the Bangla New Year and is one of the most colourful and biggest festivals of the Bengalis.

The day is generally celebrated with massive festivities on April 14 in Bangladesh and April 15 in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and Assam by people of Bangali heritage.

For the second year in a row, Pohela Boishakh celebrations remained muted across Bangladesh due to a strict weeklong lockdown that started Wednesday to curb the rising Covid-19 cases and deaths.

People are staying indoors because of the strict restrictions on public movement and gathering. Only emergency services are allowed to operate during the lockdown.

On Tuesday, the Bidens in another social media post also greeted the Muslim world on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

“As the crescent moon ushers in the month, Jill and I send our warmest greetings and best wishes to Muslim communities in the United States and around the world. Ramadan Kareem,” said the long post.

It ended with Biden saying: “As we remember those who we have lost since last Ramadan, we are hopeful for brighter days ahead.  The Holy Qur’an reminds us that “God is the light of the heavens and earth,” who leads us out of darkness to the light.

“Although our White House festivities will be held virtually this Ramadan, Jill and I look forward to resuming the traditional White House Eid celebration in person next year, inshallah.  We wish your families an inspiring and rewarding month.”

On Wednesday, Bangladesh also started observing Ramadan, a day after the Middle Eastern countries, amid the lockdown.
