Suu Kyi donates $4000 to Rakhine peace and development

In her recent speech to the people across the country, Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi said “no matter what difficulties the country faces, they can be overcome by the unity of her people,” the Frontier Myanmar reports.

In her call for people’s assistance, the state counsellor urged businessmen to give a hand in rehabilitation works in Rakhine State, in a ceremony to accept donations for the restive state in capital city of Naypyidaw on Friday.

In the northwest of Myanmar, rehabilitation works are urgently in need after Rohingya insurgent attacks and counter military clearance operations, which the United Nations has called ethnic cleansing, have sent more than 600,000 Rohingya fleeing across the border to Bangladesh.

Suu Kyi encouraged businessmen to provide input, admitting that measures taken in the past to address the issue were not sufficient. She called for collaboration so as to identify new approaches in solving the problem.

“Big businesspeople are the strength of the country. The government is also the strength of the country, and so are the people. I assume that the sound foundation of the Union’s project for Rakhine State was laid today with these three strengths,” said Suu Kyi.

“Rather than financial help or material support, we are asking for mental help - I mean both from your head and heart. I would call it goodwill. I would urge cooperation for the country,” she added.

Suu Kyi has also donated $4,000 for development efforts in Rakhine State, in the initiative also joined by more than two dozen of the country’s tycoons and business leaders.

The government formed the Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development (UEHRD) in Rakhine on October 15 to engage in humanitarian and rehabilitation works. A total of 25 business leaders offered donations to the UEHRD of nearly $13.2 million for an assortment of development projects earmarked for northern Rakhine.

Friday’s ceremony is the latest effort by Suu Kyi to promote her efforts to to resolve the Rakhine crisis, following a nationally televised address on October 15.

Meanwhile the UN said Monday that, nations have pledged $340 million to care for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, an "encouraging" step in the response to the intensifying crisis.
