'Everyone in Assam decries Mamata Banerjee’s instigating speeches and rejects them'

Assam’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary lashed out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Guwahati for her views on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) – whose final draft was published on July 30, 2018.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Patowary said: “Mamata Banerjee has no right to remark. The NRC is a legal process.

“As chief minister when she vents opposition on a matter monitored by India’s honourable Supreme Court, it amounts to contempt of court. She is not above the apex court.”

“Everyone in Assam decries Mamata Banerjee’s instigating speeches and rejects them. People here have rejected her conspiracy to instigate divisions in Assam,” added Patowary.

Patowary further said: “It will never be allowed by the people here. They want an error free NRC and continuance of peace in the state.”

“Mamata Banerjee has made the statements keeping in mind her political motives for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. The people of Assam have cast aside her attempts as everybody here are united over the NRC update,” Patowary also said.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee stated in the presence of reporters in Kolkata that the NRC will lead to “a civil war and a bloodbath in the country”.

Against the backdrop of the NRC update, eight lawmakers of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress were blocked by a large contingent of Police at the Silchar airport in Assam on Thursday.

The lawmakers, all of who landed at the airport around 1:30pm were to address public meetings in Silchar against the NRC update.

As of now, the lawmakers are still stranded at the airport.
