Tri-nation peace motor rally arrives in Bangladesh

The motor rally will cover 7,250 km in 22 days in three countries and will involve 10 vehicles

A tri-nation motor rally, marking the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, arrived in Bangladesh on Sunday to spread the message of peace and non-violence.

The motor rally, which will also promote the message of safe driving, entered Bangladesh through the Petrapole-Benapole border and will depart for India on Tuesday via the Akhaura-Agartala route.

Kalinga Motor Sports Club (KMSC), with support from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has arranged the motor rally as part of the year-long programme to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The motor rally will cover 7,250 km in 22 days in three countries and will involve 10 vehicles.

The rally began on February 4 at Rajghat and will conclude on February 24 in Yangon.

The rally will pass through Sabarmati, Porbandar, Sewagram, Jabalpur, Dandi, Yervada, Lucknow, Chauri-Chaura, Champaran, Shanti Niketan, and Kolkata.

The motor rally delegation, comprising of 35 participants and 10 vehicles, is led by Shambhu Singh, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India.

A flag-off event will be held at the Indian High Commission on Monday afternoon with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader as the chief guest.

State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives, Swapan Bhattacharya, will attend the function as the guest of honour.

An exhibition on photographs of Gandhiji and khadi will also be organized on the occasion.

The event will witness the participation of representatives from Gandhi Ashrams in Bangladesh, the Indian community, school children who participated in the quiz competition [email protected], and academics and the media, according to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

Students of Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre will perform at the event.
