1 Bangladeshi among every 5 tourists in India

Some 2.25 million tourists travelled to India from Bangladesh in 2018

Bangladeshi tourists to India have been outnumbering the tourists that come to visit India from Europe and the in for the last three years.

One in every five tourists to India is from Bangladesh, with most tourists traveling to the country for holiday and recreation purposes.

Minister of State for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel gave the country-wise outline of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) for the top 60 countries between 2016 and 2018, in reply to a query by YSRCP MP Vanga Geetha Viswanath in Lok Sabha on Thursday, reports Go News India.

Around 2.15 million and 2.25 million Bangladeshi tourists travelled to India in 2017 and 2018, respectively, where the number was at 1.38 million in 2016, reports Go News India.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals increased from 8.8 million in 2016 to 10.04 million in 2017 and 10.56 million in 2018. Foreign exchange earnings have also improved from $22.92 billion in 2016 to $27.31 billion in 2017 and $28.58 billion in 2018.

The other top sourcing countries in India in 2018 include United States of America (14.5%), United Kingdom (10.2%), Sri Lanka (3.53%), Canada (3.51%), Australia (3.46%), Malaysia (3.19%), China (2.8%), Germany (2.7%), Russian Federation (2.62%), and France (2.61%).

In 2018, Bangladesh, the United States, and the United Kingdom became the top three countries from where foreign tourists come to India for travel; however, the number of tourists from Pakistan went down.

The number of tourists arriving from Pakistan have declined from 104,000 in 2016 to 44,266 in 2017 and 41,659 in 2018. 

Among individual states, over 6,000,000 tourists visited Tamil Nadu in 2018, making it the most visited state that year. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh followed, with over 5,000,000 and 3,700,000 visits, respectively. Moreover, Delhi and Rajasthan were visited by over 2,700,000 and 1,700,000 foreign tourists, respectively.
